The 9th character: what is the check digit for?

In many markets (notably North America) the 9th character of the VIN is a “check digit.” It is computed by weighting and summing the other 16 characters with a specific mathematical formula and serves to verify the VIN was written correctly. The check digit is a transcription-accuracy check, not a security measure; it tells you whether the VIN was copied without error, not whether it is genuine. It is not necessarily mandatory on every vehicle in the European market.

Characters 10–17 (VIS) and the model year

The Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS) is the part that distinguishes one individual vehicle from another and usually contains the serial production sequence. For many manufacturers the 10th character encodes the model year and the 11th encodes the assembly plant. Model-year encoding is cyclic: letters and digits repeat on a 30-year cycle, so the 10th character alone does not give the year with certainty — the same code can map to both an older and a newer year. The final characters are mostly numeric and carry the vehicle’s sequence number on the production line. The VIS is what truly makes a VIN “unique.”
