What is the OBD2 port?
The OBD2 port (also called the OBD2 socket or diagnostic connector) is a standard 16‑pin connector that links to the vehicle’s electronic control units. Defined by the SAE J1962 standard, this port is mandatory on all OBD2/EOBD‑compliant vehicles. When an OBD2 adapter is plugged into this socket, engine data, sensor values and fault (DTC) codes become readable. By standard the connector is positioned so it can be reached from the driver seat, within about 60 cm of the steering wheel.
Why does finding the port matter?
Knowing where the port is is the first step to plugging in the adapter and starting to scan your car. Although the location varies slightly from car to car, in roughly 90% of vehicles it is under the driver-side dashboard.
